The Last Starfighter

Blue Skelton Productions

“Greetings, Starfighter. You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada.” These words bring back a few things from my childhood. The Last Starfighter is one of my favorite scifi flicks of all time and is quite possibly the best cult classic ever made.

In its article NYMF The Last Starfighter: The Hoedown Armada, Broadway World called The Last Starfighter, a guilty pleasure but let me tell you this. This movie is not a guilty pleasure it is one of the greatest films of all time. But the real gem of this news article came from the fact that there is going to be a Last Starfighter Musical. According to Broadway World, when I heard there was a musical version, I was very intrigued to see what had been done. You can find out more about the musical by clicking here.

The Last Starfighter was the, first film to use Computer Generated Imagery and it was a young nerd’s wet dream. According to HD DVD review, 1985's 'The Last Starfighter' is the epitome of a "cable cult classic." By that, I mean the kind of film that has magically transformed into a beloved classic.”

I liked the Last Starfighter for the message. I too was a young kid from a nice trailer park who was obsessed with science fiction and video games. Alex Rogan became my own personal pulp fiction hero. He single handedly escaped the park and saved the entire universe from Zur and his Kodan Armada.

But mostly it was the video game featured in the movie and the space battles. The one-liners weren’t bad either. My favorite line from the film is “What do we do know? … “We Die.” That Kodan guy was fricking cool especially when he made that cheap red plastic eye-place move into place. The guy was a badass. And when Grandma pulled the shotgun out on Alex’s alien friend, Griggs

The main reason that I made this post is that I want to someday direct a sequel to the film. I’ll call it Son of Starfighter or something pulp fictionish like that. Or maybe I can tie in Alex Rogan’s brother Lewis somehow. Who knows? The possibilities are endless and I really hope that I get to do it someday. I think that I will have to be a little bit more accomplished before I can pull it off but I am confident that once I have some street credit built up that I can do it.

I want to close by plugging an article on the Last Starfighter. Here is an interesting article comparing the Last Starfighter to the hit novel Enders Game. It’s a very interesting read even thought I am not completely sure if I agree with it.
